Akako allowed Shin to pull him into his arms, and put his own around his lover's waist, almost limply. He was still incredibly shaken by what he had realised, although it felt, too, as though a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He was free of it, he thought suddenly, hugging Shin back fiercely. Free, at last, after so many years of suffering and objectification. And it was because of Shin. It was he who had liberated Akako and allowed him to be something more.

Oh.

A wealth of relief washed through Shin and eased away his worries on a tide of gratitude. Akako had apparently decided on his own to abandon that particular type of work, something Shin was all too happy to hear. The fact that the other man had taken it upon himself to do so was even more relieving. Akako really hadn't been enjoying his prostitution and that, for all his talk in the past, he did not want to do it if he did not have to. And he certainly did not have to now....

He stared at Shin for a moment, not understanding what he meant. Then, suddenly, he did understand, and the light of comprehension hit his eyes, which widened. That - it had been bothering Shin all along? He had had no idea - he didn't really think the other man had thought about it, or had deliberately blocked it out for his own delicacy of sensibility.

The funny thing about Shin bringing it up now was that Akako had already made up his mind to stop it. He hadn't...

Shin felt an instant pang of grief and regret for the way that he had worded his initial statement. No! his mind shouted. It is nothing bad! One could argue that Shin's demand would be bad if Akako did not want to give up his job as a prostitute, but that was really for the better anyway. Stepping forward and lifting his hands to cup his lover's face, Shin kissed him squarely on the mouth to try and reassure him.

Akako leant over the bannisters, and then came downstairs properly to greet Shin, his hair wet and the thin robe clinging to his damp body. He smiled in greeting, and then went to his lover, pushing himself against him even though he was still wet. Shin wouldn't mind, and Akako was full of happiness this evening, the memory of the afternoon still spreading over his body like a blush and the prospect of the evening out together making his eyes glow.

Shin exited his study and let his eyes wander over the hall, not really seeing the tasteful decor around him. His mind was full of Akako and what to tell him, and he was so absorbed in figuring out how to be polite about his demand he hardly noticed the source of his unease was in front of him. After a long, wonderful and relaxing soak, Akako lifted himself from the deep bath, scented water rolling off his pale body in rivulets. His hair was infused with the intoxicating smell of celandine, and it fell in a thick wet rope over one shoulder. He wrapped himself in a cotton robe, and went to find Shin. He didn't know what he ought to wear tonight - his new lover had refused to tell him where they were going - it was a surprise. Akako loved surprises, but he needed a little warning...

Shin's brush danced lightly over the canvas he was working at, gently touching the mountain scene he had created with highlights of white to top off their snowy peaks. It was a simple landscape - barely more than a mountain ridge with a long, snaking river dipped between them, surrounded by a broad valley. It was vibrant with color and contained a vast amount of cloudless sky. It was not a perfect scene - far from it, for Shin's beginner skill was hardly good enough to create majesty....
