Name: Mei-Lien Chao
Age: 19
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Occupation: Freelance Warrior
Physical Description: Mei-Lein is a well defined, well developed woman with a body honed for combat and made almost
entirely out of muscle. Her long legs and shapely curves have been accentuated with tattoos, particularly one long, patterned snake that coils up the left side
of her body from knee to shoulder, sweeping across her back. She keeps her black hair short for practical reasons and shows more skin than necessary, creating
a feminine and masculine combination that highlights her gender while reaffirming her position as a warrior.
Her eyes are of two different colors. The left is red, the right is blue, and the contrasting colors are often the source of much superstition. She has had
many a monk attempt to expel demons or exorcise spirits that simply do not exist.
Personality: Strong willed, proud and headstrong, Mei-Lien is an extrovert woman who knows what she wants and is not afraid to go through a
few people to get it. Life in constant travel and in immediate danger has hardened her attitude, but the meditative mood of her clan and the brotherly bond of
her people has harboured compassion and tempered her ruthlessness. She is a very passionate girl with high hopes for the future.
Powers: Life to the unliving. Mei-Lien has the ability to bring any drawing to life for a duration of time. The more complex the nature of the
drawing, the shorter a time it can exist. Bringing to life humans or animals, for example, shortens the 'lifespan' of the conjured creation, while
creating a great stone fortress is not nearly as difficult and can last longer. Size scales according to perception of how big it should be, as does the nature
and quality of the conjured item relate equally to the perception of the drawing.
Likewise, Mei-Lien cannot have more than one image brought to life at a time.
Weapons: Mei-Lien is well versed in a duel-wielding style of swordsmanship and uses a pair of straight jian swords. She is also quiet
proficient with fighting fans.
On top of her weaponry, Mei-Lien has a set of cards she tends to keep on her person at all times. She uses them in conjunction with her ability to bring images
to life, and so they have become a mainstay in her style. They consist of four "face cards", the "Archer", the "Warrior", the
"Rogue", and the "Mage", as well as four "minor arcana cards", which conjure items: "Shield", "Sword",
"Bow" and "Rope."
Background: Mei-Lien hails from the Jade Empire. She is one of the last remaining Shitaar - a clan of secretive, cult-like warriors with the
magical ability to transmute one thing into another. It was rumoured that Alchemy was the work of the Shitaar, and that their clan-chiefs could create life out
of death and riches out of ruin. However, because of their refusal to interact with the rest of the Empire and convert their archaic hierarchy to common law,
their territories were attacked and much of their people wiped out in a war long ago.
The shattered remains of the Shitaar, now landless and outcast, became a nomadic people. Their brotherhood strengthened, their traditions deepened, and they
became even more enigmatic and withdrawn than they had before. Their distrust of anyone outside the Shitaar was intense, matched only by their loyalty to their
clan-mates.
Mei-Lien, the daughter of the High Chief, left her clan shortly after turning seventeen to travel to the Sakura Kingdom in search of a way to restore her
clan's former glory. She believes that in order to bring hope back to her wandering people they must first find a homeland to begin anew. No such place
exists in the Jade Empire, but there must be some free land somewhere. For this purpose she has travelled to Erion City seeking the knowledge held within its
libraries, and the possibilities therein.
