It came as something of a surprise to Sai to realise, as he bustled down a corridor, that he was actually happy at the Palace at the moment. It was something he wouldn't have thought likely to ever happen, two years ago. But, of course, everything had changed now. There was a new Emperor, who didn't terrify him, or anybody else for that matter. The new Emperor was a profoundly un-terrifying sort of person. He had a new boss, who wasn't a psychopath and didn't throw him across the room for fun. Nobody was currently trying to kill him or have him arrested. And he had Korin, and for once nobody seemed calculatedly out to ruin that. Yes, he was happy.
He was on his way to see Great Lord Eboshi, the son of his boss, who she had rescinded her title to on taking the dual position of Grand Adviser and Commander of the Armies. Despite Ichigo being Lady Eboshi's only son, Sai saw surprisingly little of him, although he guessed she was both very proud and very anxious about him. He was young for the burden of work, although several of the other Great Lords and Ladies were young too. Sai had very little idea about how he actually got on with it - the few brief times he had met him, in the company of Lady Eboshi, had been confined to the strictest formalities.
The reason for his visit to Lord Eboshi's rooms today was to chase up a report her ladyship wanted, about his new reforms in the army. Despite the reforms being already underway, the report had not yet materialised. It was all so much red tape, and more paper on Sai's ever-growing stack, but it had to be done - after all, that was how the kingdom functioned. He nearly missed the doors, as there were, unusually, no guards outside them. But, certain he had found the right rooms, he knocked and waited. Perhaps, if there were no guards there, it meant that Lord Eboshi wasn't in, and Sai was going to have to chase all over the place looking for him. He had a reputation for being absent from the Palace a lot...
Perhaps this was going to be one of those days he was glad he had worn sensible shoes.
