"So kid, where're you from?"

A cold treat |

Zack took Kaoru to the nearest table. After sorting out a bonus round in the current tournament, he'd decided to take her and treat her to something nice.
Though he had his own intentions, there were still a few questions he wanted answered. Resting his sword against the table and sitting down, he took a sip of
his tea, watching Kaoru carefully. She seemed innocent enough, but he'd seen enough to know that wasn't the case.
"So kid, where're you from?" "If you're lucky, I might actually try. If you're stupid, you'll stick around to see it." -Zack Martin-

The child hopped up in the chair across from him and adjusted her kimono, her own wooden sword and scabbard - it seemed it really was her weapon, not just a
training implement, since she went no where without it - shifting easily to accommodate the position comfortably. "Oh, it's pretty far away," she
told him as she took a mouthful of the syruped ice he had purchased her. "I doubt you've heard of it. I hadn't heard of Sakura, either. Thanks
again for bringing me here. This is really good."

"Glad you enjoy it." Zack replied with a smile, "And try me, I'm from far away myself." as much as he kept his attention on Kaoru as he
was, he was also paying attention to the crowd as well.

She took another bite of the sweet shaved ice before speaking. "It's called Inner Heaven. It's a city even bigger than Erion, but that's
pretty much the entire country, not counting the outlying farm settlements," she told him. "Well, technically, it's two cities. There's Inner
Heaven, which is the city proper and is surrounded by a wall, then there's Outer City, which is a transient population that built around the city, itself.
The citizens of Outer City come and go as they gain entrance into the Military Academy that's there, or give up and leave. Most of them stick it out until
they make it, though. There isn't much else around, as we live in some pretty hostile wasteland wilderness. There's just nothing habitable, and what
is, it isn't safe to settle out beyond the reach of the city's patrols."

Zack listened to the story with a blank face, when all had been said he blinked a couple of times. "...Uh... huh..." Was all the reply that came.
Taking a rather long sip of his drink he studied the girl in front of him. "So... your from heaven? Does that make you a ghost?"
"If you're lucky, I might actually try. If you're stupid, you'll stick around to see it." -Zack Martin-

The girl stared at him in confusion for a moment. "Huh? Oh!" She sat up straighter as she seemed to get what he meant. "No, no, no. Inner
Heaven's just the name of the city."

Zack nods, "I see, my mistake. Well you're right, I haven't heard of the place. Just how far away is it?"

"I'm not really sure of the exact distance," she explained, "because I was kind of yanked here by a mage. Apparently, he botched his
spell." Actually, he hadn't, and she knew it. Tane, now the Grand Magus of the Imperial Court, had fully intended to summon an uberdaemon from another
plane. The only thing unexpected was the package it came in. "The mage that did it can't figure out how to undo it. That's why I need so much
money, to hire a more specialized mage." That was another half truth. She was certain Tane knew exactly how to send her back. However, she wasn't
willing to go to him, especially now in his present role, and trust him to just do it without grief. "Once I hire a mage that can do it, I should be able
to be zapped right home."

Zack nodded slowly again, "That... well in a word that sucks." Draining his cup he ordered another. "So all we have to do is find you a mage
powerful enough to send you back?" Rapping his knuckles against the table he looked thoughtful, though moments later a grin suddenly appeared on his face.
"Actually.. I have a friend... powerful mage... he might know something of what to do."

"Really?" she asked around another childish slurp of ice. "Who is it?"

Zack waved a hand dismisively, "Doesn't matter at the moment, not until I've spoken to him anyway." Hearing a cheer from the distance Zack
turned to look at the arena. "It seems as if the middle bracket is doing alright." Turning back to Kaoru he arches a brow, looking curious again.
"Where did you learn to fight like that?"

"The wilderness," she answered, referring back to her earlier description of her homeland. "I help keep it cleared of the stronger beasts."
She glanced around like one afraid someone might overhear, then motioned him to lean over as she did the same. Once he had done so, she whispered,
"Don't tell anybody, but I'm actually in charge of it."

Zack Martin |

"Alright, I'll keep it quiet." Zack wasn't sure whether to believe that or not, but who knew how things worked out where this girl had come
from. "You're very strong, even for a kid."

But that just made her break into a grin. "I'm pretty strong even compared to an adult," she corrected. Then, more seriously as she stared down
at her shaved ice. "That's why I didn't want to go to the military. I'd rather fight for the enjoyment of others than end up a tool for
someone else and never get away."
She shifted the ice about a bit before changing the subject suddenly. "There's a lot of demons in this city, aren't there?" |
|||
Zack Martin |
|||
|
Zack let the change of subject slide, though he agreed, he preferred fighting for the sake of it. The army was just a means to an end, he needed money, and
they provided.
"There are a few yes. To be honest I'd never seen a demon myself before coming here. But I've learnt that not all of them in bad. Some of my good friends are yokai." "If you're lucky, I might actually try. If you're stupid, you'll stick around to see it." -Zack Martin-

Sakurazuka Kaoru |

"They seem ..." She seemed hesitant to breach the subject. "They don't seem very strong. For demons. Is that normal for them here?"
|
|||
Zack Martin |

Zack considered this a moment, a little taken aback. "They're stronger than most humans I know..." He said slowly, "Why? Are they stronger
where you come from?"
"If you're lucky, I might actually try. If you're stupid, you'll stick around to see it." -Zack Martin-

"Much stronger," she confirmed with a nod of her head. "Much, much stronger." And then again, as if after a moment, she decided that
hadn't illustrated it enough, "Much, much, much stronger."
|
|||
Zack Martin |
|||
|
"I see." Zack said again, just as slowly. He looked at Kaoru again, regarding her closely before asking, "As strong as you?"
"If you're lucky, I might actually try. If you're stupid, you'll stick around to see it." -Zack Martin-

The girl started to nod - and then her head froze halfway. "I-I mean ... we're all pretty strong there ... Maybe it's just the environment
..." She quickly dipped her head back to her bowl of ice.

Zack said nothing, taking another sip of his tea, keeping his gaze on the girl in front of him. He had suspicions, now they were only stronger. He decided
there was an easy way to test his theory out. Finishing his drink he waited another moment before stating, "You're the youngest looking demon I've
seen kid."
